We caught up with Chee Kok Foo at the DeToyz Modelers’ Meetup 2025 to hear the story behind his upgraded PG Gundam Astray Red Frame Kai – reimagined in a powerful Red Dragon form.

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’ve enjoyed building mecha and robot kits ever since I was 15. Back then it was mostly straight builds, but things changed during the 2020 MCO lockdown — that’s when I picked up airbrush painting and started exploring more advanced techniques.

What inspired this model?

I wanted to customize the PG Red Frame Kai into a Red Dragon Form. It was a personal challenge to push the kit beyond its original design and give it a unique visual impact.

Any special techniques or materials used?

Added third-party parts for enhanced proportions and details
Extra scribing for color separation and sharper panel lines
Fully painted inner frame
Color separation achieved through careful masking

Favorite kits or dream projects?

My all-time favorite is the PGU RX-78-2. I haven’t started any new project yet, but I’m hoping to find fresh inspiration and kick off something new this year.

Anything you’d like to say to fellow modelers?

I really enjoyed the meetup at DeToyz Shop — made some new friends and got inspired by all the skills, ideas, and stories shared by fellow builders.
