DeAgostini AE86 Build Journal - Project Introduction
DeAgostini 1/8 Toyota Trueno AE86 Build Journal — Project Introduction
Back in November 2025, I received the first two issues of the DeAgostini 1/8 Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86.
Even at that early stage, the project made a strong impression on me. The scale, weight and overall quality of the supplied parts immediately made it feel different from an ordinary model kit.
When I published my Issues 1–2 Packaging & Parts Review, I was still unsure whether I would eventually build one myself.
After several more months of following the Malaysian release, that decision has now been made.
From Parts Reviews to a Complete Build
Since the first release, I have continued documenting the series through the DeAgostini AE86 Packaging & Parts Review articles.
At the time of writing, the reviews have reached Issue 16. Looking through each new batch has allowed me to observe the consistency of the parts, finishes, materials and overall presentation of the collection.
Until now, however, most of those observations have been made through the packaging.
I could see the parts, identify the components and study how the project was developing, but I had not yet been able to experience how everything actually fits and works together.
With the complete 110-issue collection now secured, and the first 37 issues already in the workshop, it is time to begin the next stage.
The remaining Issues 38–110 are expected to arrive by the end of July or early August. This means I can begin preparing and assembling the early stages now while the rest of the collection makes its way to the workshop.

Building the Full 1/8 Scale AE86
This project will document the complete assembly of the DeAgostini 1/8 Toyota Sprinter Trueno AE86, beginning with the first components and continuing all the way to the finished car.
Instead of only examining the parts from outside the packaging, I will now be able to handle, fit and test them throughout the entire build.
The Build Journal will look more closely at areas such as:
- Parts quality and materials
- Fit and alignment
- Assembly difficulty
- Tools used during the build
- Important cautions and possible mistakes
- Mechanical and electrical functions
- Problems encountered and how they are resolved
- The appearance and feel of each completed stage
The aim is not simply to show that another group of issues has been completed. I want to document what the build is actually like from the builder’s point of view.
Selected Custom Racing Upgrades
The project will not necessarily remain completely factory standard.
As the build progresses, I also plan to incorporate selected custom racing parts and detail upgrades where they suit the final direction of the car.
These additions will be tested and introduced gradually rather than decided all at once. The priority is still to understand the original DeAgostini design before making changes to it.
Any custom parts used will also be documented as part of the Build Journal.
An Early Look for AE86 Subscribers
For current DeAgostini AE86 subscribers, this Build Journal should provide an early look at the assembly process before the later issues arrive.
It may help builders understand:
- What each stage involves
- Which areas require additional care
- What tools may be useful
- What problems could appear
- How the completed assemblies look outside the packaging
- How the individual components eventually connect to the full car
For readers who have not subscribed but are interested in the project, the series should also provide a clearer understanding of its scale, construction, features and overall complexity.
The Packaging & Parts Reviews Will Continue
The new Build Journal will not replace the existing Packaging & Parts Review series.
The two series have different purposes.
The Packaging & Parts Reviews will continue to follow the Malaysian release schedule, documenting what is supplied with each batch before assembly.
The Build Journal will focus on the actual construction process—how the parts fit, how the mechanisms work and how the AE86 gradually takes shape.
Together, they should form a more complete record of the Malaysian DeAgostini AE86 release.
Follow the Full Build

This will be a long project, but that is also what makes it interesting.
The progress will be documented through:
- DeToyz Notes for the detailed Build Journal
- YouTube for longer build videos
- Instagram for shorter visual updates
- Facebook for project updates and new articles
- DeToyz WhatsApp Channel for publication notices and workshop progress
- Email subscription for new Build Journal articles and major project updates
The first 37 issues are now being counted, checked and organised.
Once everything is ready, the complete build begins.
